Luleå is in an expansive phase, with several major infrastructure projects shaping the sustainable society of the future.
Some of Sweden’s most ambitious initiatives in water and sewage, energy transition, transport, and urban development are currently underway here.
The expansion of Port of Luleå
Luleå and Norrbotten have a unique opportunity to become a leader for the industrial transition. To make the shift towards more sustainable production possible, a link to the rest of the world is essential. Within a few years, Port of Luleå plan to be able to transport three to four times more cargo than today, accommodate four times as much vessel traffic, and handle entirely new types of goods. The port’s development and strengthened cargo capacity are fundamental prerequisites for the growth and green transition now taking place within the mining and steel industries in the north.
Östra länken (The Eastern Link)
The Eastern Link is one of Sweden’s largest water and sewage infrastructure projects, aimed at modernizing the city’s water and wastewater systems. The project began in 2014 and is scheduled for completion in 2026. It includes over 20 kilometers of new pipelines and several new pumping stations. The goal is to secure water supply and wastewater management for a growing population, with a target of 100,000 residents.
Luleå’s Future Travel Center
Luleå’s future travel center is being developed in collaboration between Luleå Municipality, the Swedish Transport Administration, Jernhusen, and the regional public transport authority. The aim is to create a modern and attractive station that facilitates smooth transfers between trains, buses, and other modes of transport.
Malmporten
Malmporten is Sweden’s largest dredging project in modern times—but more importantly, it’s a project with major benefits for the environment, society, and people. Once completed, the Port of Luleå will be able to receive larger, fully loaded vessels and handle three to four times more cargo than today.
