Technical visits – renewable energy
In Luleå, several innovative projects are underway focusing on renewable energy and sustainable solutions, with a particular emphasis on fossil-free district heating, hydrogen production, and circular energy systems.
Future District Heating
The Future District Heating project is a central part of Luleå Energi’s efforts to future-proof the city’s energy system. In 2025, the project will focus on expanding and strengthening the district heating network in both new residential areas and growing industrial zones.
The Luleå Model
The Luleå Model is a collaborative framework developed in Luleå to meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity driven by the green industrial transition in northern Sweden. The model is based on close cooperation between energy companies, municipalities, authorities, and industrial enterprises.
Instead of each actor planning in isolation, all parties come together to jointly identify actual needs, prioritize projects, and optimize the use of the electricity grid’s capacity.
Power2Earth
Power2Earth is an industrial development project aimed at enabling large-scale production and distribution of fossil-free hydrogen in northern Sweden. Led by Nordion Energi, the project includes a hydrogen pipeline approximately 170 kilometers long, stretching from Jokkmokk to Luleå.
Botnialänken H2
Botnialänken H2 is a collaboration between Uniper, ABB, Luleå Energi, ESL Shipping, and the Port of Luleå. The goal is to establish a regional hydrogen hub in Luleå. The project aims to produce fossil-free hydrogen using renewable electricity—primarily from wind power—and apply it across the value chain, from industrial processes to the production of electrofuels for ships.
