The Environment & Public Health Department and the Environmental Committee and how we can help you

Luleå´s Environmental Committee is an authority that has the task of checking how things look in the environment and food area in Luleå municipality.
The Environmental Committee must ensure that the purpose of the legislation is fulfilled.
The Environmental Committee consists of 15 politicians.

To assist them, they have the Environment & Public Health Department.
In the Environment & Public Health Department there are people who carry out practical tasks like answering questions, giving advice and checking that laws and rules are being followed.
Most of us who work at the Environment & Public Health Department are called environmental inspectors.

Environmental inspectors check how things look in many areas in Luleå.
In Sweden we have environmental goals that tell us how things should look now and in the future.
The environmental goals tells us what we in Sweden need to do to protect the air, the water, the countryside, animals and people.
The goals are the basis of much of what we do at the Environment & Public Health Department.

The environmental inspectors visit companies that do things that might harm people and the countryside.
These might for example be industries that release things into the air or water, noisy discotheques, wastewater treatment plants that treat sewage from toilets, and tattooists who tattoo people. The environmental inspectors do this to see whether the companies are following the law.

The environmental inspectors also visit all companies that sell food.
It is important to store and cook food in the right way so that people who eat the food do not become ill.

If you become ill after eating at a café or restaurant for example, you can phone us and we will visit the café or restaurant to see if they are handling the food in the wrong way.
This is free of charge.

Starting a company

In order to start certain types of companies, for example an industry or a company that sells food, an application must be made to the Environmental Committee.
The Environmental Committee then decides if the company can start doing business.
If you want to start a company that sells food, for example a café, a pizzeria or a restaurant, you must make an application to the Environmental Committee two weeks before you intend to open for business.

Call us at the Environment & Public Health Department to find out more or to get help with your application.

Your home

Your home must not make you ill.
Things like damp and fungus in bathrooms, vermin, bad smells, loud noise, poor ventilation or not enough heat, for example, can sometimes be problems in people´s homes.
If you have a complaint, contact your landlord first.
If you do not get help from your landlord, you can contact us at the Environment & Public Health Department and we will talk to your landlord.
This is free of charge.
