Every winter in Luleå Archipelago, about 25 km of ice roads are kept clear of snow and can be safely used by cars and even trucks. The ice roads are about 40-45 metres wide and the ice is about half a metre thick when clearing begins. It is a very special feeling to cross the icy expanses by car. How early the ice roads are opened each winter naturally depends on the weather and ice situation. Contact Luleå Tourist Office for up to date information about the status of the ice roads. Luleå Council normally clears ice roads along three routes in Luleå Archipelago. One is from Sandön Island (via Tjuvholmssundet) to Junkön. The two others both start at Hindersöstallarna but after a short stretch they branch off, to Hindersön and Storbrändön respectively. One option is to drive to Hindersön and then ski to Jopikgården for a delicious dinner.
