Hindersön is one of the largest islands in the Luleå Archipelago and is the only seaboard island with agriculture north of Gräsö in central Swedish Roslagen. People whose subsistence was fishing, farming and seal hunting inhabited the island as early as the 1500s.
Hindersön has always been the most populated island in the archipelago and still has a permanent population. Iron ore, discovered on the island in 1842, was mined during several periods. The mine and powder magazine, on Oxgrundet in Norrisundet, are all that remain from this era. Lime was also quarried, at first only for domestic use, but later on an industrial scale when a limekiln was built. The kiln, which has been restored, stands just northeast of Hannosviken.
Hindersön´s flora covers a broad spectrum of plants from wild strawberries and arctic raspberries to the rare and beautiful Siberian primrose and ghost orchid. Much of Hindersön is covered by spruce forest, but there are also pine forests and open sandy areas. Game animals and birds common to the archipelago are found here and there are plenty of hares, woodland birds and seabirds. Osprey nest on the island.During the summer you can sail to Hinder Island on the M/S Laponia
