More and more local people in Luleå are discovering the pleasure there is in tour skating, an activity that is suitable for most age groups. The lakes and bays are usually iced over by the end of October. Some winters, the ice is smooth and bare for one or two weeks, but often there is quite soon a covering of frost and snow. So you have to seize the opportunity!
Many people think the skating season ends when the ground gets its snow covering, but this is not necessarily true. Along the coastline, the ice covering comes much later. Real skating enthusiasts follow the growing ice cover out towards the open sea right up until January. In late winter too, there can be good ice conditions when floodwater freezes to ice along the shores.

Every winter, the Recreation Department clears and hoses an ice track for skaters and kick sleigh users from Norra Hamn (North Harbour) to Södra Hamn (South Harbour).
