How do you take care of a World Heritage Site?

We have a common responsibility

Its designation as a "World Heritage Site" gives Gammelstad a hallmark. It attracts attention, and brings new challenges and opportunities which we must all help to make the most of. Taking care of a World Heritage Site is a privilege that brings obligations - upkeep and development must take place in a well thought out way which preserves the unique properties of the Church Town.

Church Town Council

To meet this responsibility, there is a cooperation and discussion forum for Gammelstad Church Town - the Church Town Council - assembling parties interested in the World Heritage Site area.

Management plan

Management is based on a management plan, which is a joint document unifying all involved players.

Laws and ordinances

There are guidelines, laws, programmes and ordinances to be observed when taking care of a World Heritage Site. You can find some of them via the menu on the left. The World Heritage Site coordinator at the Visitor Centre can help you find the right person to talk to or can tell you what legislation applies in different situations.
