Framework

The church cottages have a timber frame. On most church cottages the framework is covered by panelling. Despite the protecting panels, the timber frame can become damaged. Specially vulnerable places include the ground sill, i.e. the lowest layer of timber, the corners and below the windows.

The church cottages are occasionally heated, but are usually cold. This means a risk of condensation in the framework. Therefore check the wall behind the chimneystack and the floor to ensure that they are not too tight-fitting. Ensure that there is good ventilation in the foundations. It is best if the building can “breathe".
