For a long time, the church cottages were unpainted, with untreated timber. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that people began to nail panels onto the cottage wall facing the street. It was usually slow-growth pine that was used for panelling, while panels sold today are often spruce. It is permissible to change single panels if there is rot. The panels must be painted with genuine Falu red paint without mixing in oil or latex.
