All the church cottages were built with an open fireplace inside. At the end of the 19th century, it was common to replace the open fireplace with an iron stove, and today many cottages have hot-air stoves. The brickwork fireplaces with their chimneys are an important part of the Church Town. The smoke that climbs to the sky from the church cottages during big religious feasts keeps the Church Town tradition alive and concrete! Chimneys in olden times were usually very narrow and were crowned at the top with an overhang that gave the chimney a kind of simple decoration. The bricks were cemented together with clay or lime mortar. The chimneys can be made of bare brickwork or can be covered by plaster or limewash. There is a major fire hazard in the Church Town. Do not forget to have the chimney swept and ensure that the chimney and smoke flues are undamaged.
